# Jag vill se Gällivare brinna (I Want to See Gällivare Burn)

## The challenge

The whole film plays out in the red, never-quite-dark light of a Norrbotten summer night. That light is beautiful in person and tricky on camera: color temperature drifts from shot to shot, skies want to blow out, and scenes shot hours apart have to feel like one continuous night. The grade had to make it feel like a dream without losing the boys' faces.

## The approach

I graded shot by shot, shaping the low, endless light into one look: glowing reds in the sky, deep greens and violets in the water, and skin tones kept honest throughout. Drag the before-and-after to see the kind of shift involved.

## The outcome

The film won five awards at Novemberfestivalen 2020, including Best Cinematography and the audience award, was selected for Göteborg Film Festival, and was distributed by Folkets Bio and SVT. The jury called the cinematography “fantastic”, which is the kind of review a colorist quietly screenshots.
